Obsidian Farming & Refining

Quick Answer

Farm KotHaar enemies in Umbral Sands and process their drops at a Grindstone. Combine nine Ground Obsidian in a Blast Furnace to obtain one Refined Obsidian.

The main repeatable way to get Obsidian in RuneScape: Dragonwilds is to hunt KotHaar enemies in Umbral Sands, open the packs they drop, and process the resulting Elder Curiosities and Obsidian Devices. Use a Grindstone to turn those items into Ground Obsidian, then process nine Ground Obsidian at a Blast Furnace to create one Refined Obsidian.

The complete production chain is:

  1. Kill KotHaar in Umbral Sands and open their packs.
  2. Process one Elder Curiosity into one Ground Obsidian at a Grindstone.
  3. Process one Obsidian Device into three Ground Obsidian at a Grindstone.
  4. Load nine Ground Obsidian into a Blast Furnace to make one Refined Obsidian.
  5. Use Refined Obsidian in armour, weapons, shields, robes, and staves after obtaining the appropriate recipes.

Umbral Sands chests can also contain Ground or Refined Obsidian, but the repeatable route is built around KotHaar drops. Do not spend time searching for a normal Obsidian ore vein: the supplied material identifies processing enemy drops as the practical farming loop.

Prepare Before Farming Obsidian

Obsidian belongs to the Umbral Sands stage of progression. Before attempting a long farming run, establish the production stations and travel setup that let you turn each trip into finished material.

Bring combat equipment appropriate for Umbral Sands, healing supplies, water, and enough inventory space for packs and their contents. KotHaar farming becomes inefficient when a full inventory forces you to leave before completing a useful circuit. A nearby Lodestone can shorten repeat visits, but this page focuses on Obsidian rather than the wider Lodestone network.

Your base needs two essential facilities:

  • Grindstone: converts Elder Curiosities and Obsidian Devices into Ground Obsidian.
  • Blast Furnace: converts nine Ground Obsidian into one Refined Obsidian. Keep the furnace supplied with fuel pellets before starting a large batch.

Check both stations before leaving. Returning with a full load only to discover that the Blast Furnace lacks fuel adds another gathering trip between the drop and the finished material.

Water magic is the most consistently supported combat choice in the supplied farming material. It is especially useful against the larger KotHaar targets discussed in the research. Fire is a poor choice against the large TokTz-Xil enemy because that target is described as immune to fire and burning. Ranged attacks can be used from elevated safe positions, although the same target is described as resistant to ranged damage, so a safe fight may take longer.

Choose an Obsidian Farming Area

KotHaar appear across Umbral Sands, but the terrain and nearby enemies make some areas more convenient than others. Choose a route that matches your equipment rather than chasing the most dangerous target immediately.

Eastern Pyramid in the Dunes of Uzer

The area around the Eastern Pyramid in the Dunes of Uzer is the clearest starting option documented in the supplied farming material. Several KotHaar types can appear in the area, allowing you to collect packs without navigating the lava around the Burning Spire.

The trade-off is exposure. The open terrain offers fewer obstacles to separate enemies or protect you after a mistake. Place a Lodestone within practical travelling distance, approach one group at a time, and leave room to retreat instead of pulling every nearby enemy into the same fight.

Eastern ruins

The ruins farther east offer elevated structures that can be used as firing positions against a large KotHaar target in the central area. This makes the location useful when you prefer controlled ranged or magic attacks from above.

The ruins are not empty. Clear nearby enemies and hostile plants before starting the main fight. A safe position against one target does not protect you from another creature that approaches from behind. The location works best when you first secure the platform, then engage the KotHaar.

Burning Spire

The Burning Spire contains a higher concentration of KotHaar targets, including multiple large enemies, but it is also the most hazardous farming environment described in the research. Lava divides the area into small islands, and KotHaar can move through it even though it remains dangerous to the player. A red dragon may also be present in part of the region.

Treat the Burning Spire as a combat route rather than a single stationary camp. Clear supporting enemies before engaging a large target, watch the edge of each island while dodging, and avoid allowing a long fight to push you toward lava. This route is better suited to players who can already survive Umbral Sands encounters reliably.

Southwest Umbral Sands

Another large KotHaar target appears near the Nightmare Crucible entrance and the crack in southwestern Umbral Sands. The supplied material warns about additional enemies and quicksand around this encounter. Clear the surrounding threats first or keep the main enemy confined near the crack so that the fight does not spread across the area.

This location can be added to a wider circuit, but it is not the simplest first farm. Use it when your normal route is exhausted or when you are already travelling near the Nightmare Crucible.

Convert KotHaar Drops into Refined Obsidian

After opening your KotHaar packs, separate Elder Curiosities and Obsidian Devices from unrelated rewards. Both items feed the same crafting chain, but their yields differ.

An Obsidian Device is therefore worth three Elder Curiosities for material planning. Three Obsidian Devices provide the nine Ground Obsidian needed for one Refined Obsidian. If you are using only Elder Curiosities, you need nine of them for the same result.

For a mixed haul, count each Elder Curiosity as one point and each Obsidian Device as three points. Every nine points produce one Refined Obsidian, with any remaining Ground Obsidian staying available for the next batch. This prevents you from overestimating how much finished material is waiting in a chest full of mixed drops.

Queue the Grindstone conversions first. Once the resulting Ground Obsidian reaches a multiple of nine, move that material to the Blast Furnace. Keeping Ground and Refined Obsidian in separate storage makes it easier to compare your supply with a recipe cost.

Umbral Sands chests provide a secondary source. The structured material lists two to five Ground Obsidian or one Refined Obsidian as possible chest contents. Treat these as useful additions to a combat route rather than the foundation of a production target, because a chest does not guarantee that particular reward.

Plan Refined Obsidian for Gear

Refined Obsidian is used well beyond the equipment carrying the Obsidian name. It appears in several tier-seven armour sets, magic equipment, and KotHaar-style weapons. Decide what you intend to craft before converting an entire farming session into an arbitrary stockpile.

Obsidian armour costs

The three-piece Obsidian armour set requires both Refined Obsidian and Scorch Leather at an Armour Bench.

PieceRefined ObsidianScorch Leather
Obsidian Helmet106
Obsidian Chest1814
Obsidian Legs1410
Full set4230

A full set therefore requires 42 Refined Obsidian. Because each refined unit consumes nine Ground Obsidian, the complete set represents 378 Ground Obsidian before accounting for the Scorch Leather. That equals 378 Elder Curiosities if they are your only input, 126 Obsidian Devices if they are your only input, or an equivalent mixed haul.

Do not begin this grind based only on the material total. Having Refined Obsidian does not automatically provide every crafting recipe. Confirm that the armour pieces appear as available recipes at your Armour Bench before committing all 42 units to the set.

The finished armour is melee-oriented. Each piece has 1,500 durability, and the full set provides 106 melee defence, 94 ranged defence, and 90 magic defence.

Other armour sets

Several other three-piece sets consume six Refined Obsidian in total. Their other materials differ, so Obsidian is only one part of each production chain.

SetHeadBodyLegsTotal Refined Obsidian
Adamant1326
Desert robes1326
Infinity robes1326
Lunar Garou robes1326
Red Dragon armour1326

The Adamant recipes support either the regular Adamant Helmet or Adamant Med Helm; each helmet option uses one Refined Obsidian. The six-unit total assumes that you craft one helmet, one platebody, and one pair of platelegs.

Weapons, shields, and magic equipment

Refined Obsidian is also required for several individual items:

ItemFacilityRefined Obsidian
Master WandMystic Forge3
Master's StaffMystic Forge6
TokTz-Ket-XilBlacksmith's Bench10
Toktz-Xil-AkBlacksmith's Bench10
TzHaar-Ket-OmBlacksmith's Bench16
Toktz-Mej-TalMystic Forge22

These recipes also require other materials. For example, the Master's Staff needs Yew Logs, Infinity Cloth, Dragonstone, and Gypsum Wax in addition to its six Refined Obsidian. The TokTz-Ket-Xil also requires Scorch Leather, while other KotHaar weapons use combinations that include Dragonstone, Desert Thread, or Red Dragonhide Leather.

If your immediate goal is a six-unit armour set or the Master's Staff, stop after producing the required six Refined Obsidian. Farming the 42 units needed for full Obsidian armour is a substantially larger commitment and should not delay a smaller upgrade that helps you survive subsequent runs.

Use an Efficient Farming Loop

A reliable loop is more valuable than a risky route that occasionally produces a large haul. Use the following order for each run:

  1. Empty unnecessary inventory slots and repair your preferred equipment.
  2. Take healing, water, and the runes or weapons needed for your chosen targets.
  3. Travel to the Eastern Pyramid or eastern ruins for the most controlled opening fights.
  4. Clear nearby supporting enemies before engaging a large KotHaar.
  5. Open every collected pack so you can see the actual Elder Curiosity and Obsidian Device yield.
  6. Continue into the Burning Spire or southwest encounter only if your supplies and inventory still allow it.
  7. Return before a death risks turning the trip into an equipment-recovery run.
  8. Grind all curiosities and devices, then refine complete groups of nine Ground Obsidian.
  9. Record progress in finished Refined Obsidian, not unopened packs or unprocessed curiosities.

When farming large totals, multiple Grindstones or Blast Furnaces can process parallel queues. This improves base throughput, but it does not improve the enemy drop rate. Add stations only when processing has become the actual bottleneck; otherwise, keep the setup simple and spend the materials on combat readiness.

Avoid Common Obsidian Mistakes

Searching for a mineable node: The supported repeatable chain begins with KotHaar drops, not a conventional Obsidian deposit. Ground Obsidian is a processed item, and Refined Obsidian is the next processed stage.

Confusing Ground and Refined Obsidian: Recipes in the equipment tables require Refined Obsidian. A stack of nine Ground Obsidian represents only one refined unit after Blast Furnace processing.

Counting packs as guaranteed material: A pack is a container, not a fixed amount of Refined Obsidian. Open it and count the actual Elder Curiosities and Obsidian Devices before estimating the result.

Farming recipes and materials as if they were the same unlock: Refined Obsidian supplies the ingredient, but some equipment still needs a recipe or vestige unlock. If an item is absent from its crafting station, collecting more Obsidian alone will not make it appear.

Pulling supporting enemies into a large fight: Several documented farming sites contain additional melee or ranged enemies. Clear them first. Most avoidable deaths occur when the main KotHaar attack overlaps with damage from an enemy that was ignored at the start.

Using fire against a fire-immune target: The large TokTz-Xil target is described as immune to fire and burning. Switch to water magic or another supported damage option rather than extending the fight with ineffective attacks.

Treating the Obsidian Cape as a refinement recipe: The cape is associated with the Brink of Extinction quest in the supplied material. It is not the result of simply processing Ground Obsidian. The cape provides four melee, ranged, and magic defence, but obtaining it follows a quest path rather than the basic material loop.

Obsidian Farming Checklist

Before leaving your base, confirm that you have:

  • combat equipment capable of handling Umbral Sands;
  • water magic or another effective non-fire option;
  • enough food, water, and inventory space for a full route;
  • a Grindstone ready for Elder Curiosities and Obsidian Devices;
  • a fuelled Blast Furnace for groups of nine Ground Obsidian;
  • a specific Refined Obsidian target based on the item you plan to craft;
  • the required recipe visible at the correct crafting station;
  • the non-Obsidian ingredients needed to complete that recipe.

For the shortest useful target, three Obsidian Devices produce enough Ground Obsidian for one Refined Obsidian. For a common six-unit target, such as a three-piece secondary armour set or a Master's Staff, plan for 54 Ground Obsidian. For the complete Obsidian armour set, plan for 378 Ground Obsidian plus 30 Scorch Leather. Keeping those totals in view turns an open-ended KotHaar grind into a route with a clear stopping point.
