To make Adhesive in RuneScape: Dragonwilds, collect Swamp Tar in the Whispering Swamp, place it in a Kiln, and start the processing operation. The conversion is exactly 1 Swamp Tar to 1 Adhesive. Swamp Tar appears as shiny black deposits on the ground and can also come from glowing-eyed Putrid Rats in the swamp.
The Kiln is the only required processing station. If you have not built one, gather Clay in the same swamp to unlock its recipe, then find the Kiln in the Crafting section of the build menu. A Kiln costs 8 Ash Logs, 20 Stone, 6 Clay, and 10 Fire Runes according to the available build recipe information.
Adhesive weighs 0.5 per item and stacks up to 99 in the current 1.0 item data. It is used in equipment, processed materials, storage structures, and other crafting recipes, so collecting more Swamp Tar than you need for one immediate craft can prevent another trip.

The finished Adhesive item.
There is no multi-step refining chain between Swamp Tar and Adhesive. The important distinction is that the black material collected in the swamp is Swamp Tar, while Adhesive is the finished Kiln output. If a recipe calls for Adhesive, carrying raw Swamp Tar is not enough; it must first be processed.
The 1:1 rate also makes planning simple. If a project requires six Adhesive, collect at least six Swamp Tar. The supplied recipe data does not show a chance-based yield or extra output, so do not plan around receiving more Adhesive than the amount of tar you load.
Find Swamp Tar in Whispering Swamp
Whispering Swamp borders the northern side of Bramblemead Valley. This is the main area to search because it contains both resources needed for the basic Adhesive setup: Swamp Tar for processing and Clay for building the Kiln.

The Whispering Swamp location for collecting Swamp Tar and Clay.
Use the following identification clues while searching:
- Swamp Tar looks like a shiny black blob lying on the ground.
- Its dark color can blend into the swamp floor and water, making it easy to walk past.
- Several deposits can appear near one another, sometimes in loose groups of five or six.
- Glowing-eyed Putrid Rats in the swamp provide another possible source of Swamp Tar.
- Clay appears as a much larger, block-like ground deposit and requires a pickaxe to mine.
A useful search area is the bridge on the eastern side of Whispering Swamp that leads toward the vault. Goblin enemies can be found around the bridge. After crossing it, follow the descending path and inspect the ground carefully; multiple Swamp Tar deposits can appear along this route.
Do not search only beside obvious landmarks. The resource is small relative to Clay nodes and can disappear visually against dark terrain. Walk the route slowly enough to inspect both the path and its edges. Once you recognize the glossy black model, later deposits become much easier to distinguish from ordinary mud or water.

Swamp Tar appears as a shiny black deposit, while Clay forms large square nodes.
Prepare for tar and Clay collection
Bring the tools needed for any Kiln materials you still lack:
- Use an axe to collect the Ash Logs required for the Kiln. Ash trees are available in Bramblemead Valley.
- Use a pickaxe for Stone and Clay. Stone can be gathered throughout the valley, while Clay is available in Whispering Swamp.
- Leave enough inventory capacity for both Swamp Tar and Clay if you are making the trip before unlocking the Kiln.
- Count the Adhesive required by your planned recipes before leaving, then collect the same number of Swamp Tar because the conversion rate is one to one.
If you already own a Kiln, Clay is not part of the Adhesive processing recipe. Do not repeatedly gather Clay when your only missing material is Swamp Tar. Clay matters for unlocking and constructing the station; the actual Adhesive operation consumes only the tar.
Use Putrid Rats as a secondary source
Ground deposits provide the clearest collection route because you can recognize and pick up the exact material you need. Putrid Rats are an additional source while you are already exploring the swamp. Their glowing eyes help distinguish them from the surrounding terrain.
Treat enemy drops as a supplement rather than a replacement for checking the ground. A tar route remains useful even when no suitable rat is immediately nearby, while any Swamp Tar obtained from enemies simply reduces the number of deposits you still need to collect.
Miscellaneous Salvage is also listed as a possible Adhesive source, producing 3–6 Adhesive at a listed rarity of 5.26/100. Because that source is uncommon and does not give you a predictable amount on demand, it is better treated as a bonus. Swamp Tar and a Kiln provide the controllable route when a specific recipe is blocked.
Build and place the Kiln
Collecting Clay unlocks the Kiln recipe. Open the build menu, enter its Crafting section, and look for the Kiln after obtaining Clay. The listed construction cost is:
| Kiln material | Quantity | Collection note |
|---|---|---|
| Ash Logs | 8 | Cut Ash trees in Bramblemead Valley with an axe |
| Stone | 20 | Mine stone deposits with a pickaxe |
| Clay | 6 | Mine Clay deposits in Whispering Swamp with a pickaxe |
| Fire Runes | 10 | Craft at a Rune Altar from Rune Essence or obtain from enemy packs |
The Kiln cost is separate from the Adhesive recipe. These construction materials create the reusable station; they are not consumed again for every piece of Adhesive. After the Kiln is placed, each additional operation only needs Swamp Tar.
Fire Runes are the component most likely to require a separate preparation step. They can be crafted at the Rune Altar using Rune Essence. They can also be obtained by defeating enemies and opening their packs. If the Kiln is still unavailable after collecting the physical building materials, check that you have the full Fire Rune quantity and that the recipe is being viewed in the Crafting part of the build menu.
Before committing the materials, read the cost displayed in your current build menu. The game is on the 1.0 release line and continues to receive updates, while the essential current Adhesive conversion remains one Swamp Tar into one Adhesive.
Turn Swamp Tar into Adhesive
Once the Kiln is ready, the processing sequence is short:
- Interact with the Kiln.
- Place Swamp Tar into the station as the input material.
- Start the available processing operation.
- Allow the operation to finish.
- Collect the resulting Adhesive.
- Repeat until the output matches the amount required by your planned crafts.

The Kiln processing view confirms the Swamp Tar-to-Adhesive recipe.
Every Swamp Tar produces one Adhesive. For example, loading three Swamp Tar provides the three Adhesive required by the listed Abysmal Whip recipe. Loading six provides enough Adhesive for one Tanner's Kit, assuming you also have its other materials. The ratio never requires rounding: your tar target and Adhesive target are the same number.
If you return from the swamp with tar but a crafting recipe still reports missing Adhesive, confirm that you collected the Kiln output. Raw Swamp Tar and processed Adhesive occupy different roles, and the downstream recipe will not substitute one for the other.
Calculate the Adhesive needed for each recipe
Adhesive is not restricted to one equipment tier or one station. It appears in weapon components, leather processing, utility items, storage buildings, and the Abysmal Whip. Use the exact per-operation quantities below to plan a tar run without turning this page into a separate walkthrough for those items.
| Product | Adhesive needed | Other listed materials | Facility or menu |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abysmal Whip | 3 | 1 Abyssal Spine, 3 Shrapnel, 3 Swamp Thread, 4 Vault Shard | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Fuel Pellet | 1 | 1 Charcoal, 1 Coarse Animal Fur | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Hard Leather | 1 | 2 Leather | Tanning station |
| Weapon Barbs | 1 | 1 Shrapnel, 1 Bronze Bar | Blacksmith's Bench |
| Iron Chest | 1 | 16 Oak Plank, 2 Iron Bar | Build Menu |
| Lumber Storage | 2 | 16 Maple Logs | Build Menu |
| Ore & Stone Storage | 2 | 16 Maple Logs | Build Menu |
| Tanner's Kit | 6 | 6 Bronze Bar, 8 Coarse Thread, 18 Ash Plank | Build Menu |
The whip name in this table is Abysmal Whip. Do not confuse it with the separate Abyssal Whip progression introduced by the 1.0 weapon rework. The Adhesive recipe data specifically lists three Adhesive for the Abysmal Whip alongside the other materials shown above.
Hard Leather consumes one Adhesive for every two Leather. If you plan several Hard Leather operations, multiply the number of operations by one—not the number of individual Leather pieces. For example, four listed Hard Leather operations require eight Leather and four Adhesive.
Storage buildings create another common source of unexpected demand. Lumber Storage and Ore & Stone Storage each need two Adhesive, while an Iron Chest needs one. Building one of each therefore consumes five Adhesive in total. That means five Swamp Tar must pass through the Kiln before those three building recipes can all be completed.
The Tanner's Kit is the largest single Adhesive cost shown in the supplied recipe list at six. If that is your immediate goal, collect at least six Swamp Tar before leaving Whispering Swamp. Check the Bronze Bars, Coarse Thread, and Ash Planks separately so that Adhesive does not become the only completed part of an otherwise unfinished build.
Plan efficient Adhesive batches
A good batch begins with the output you actually intend to craft. Write down each recipe and add only its Adhesive column. Because the Kiln conversion is 1:1, the result is also the minimum number of Swamp Tar deposits or drops you need.
For example:
- One Lumber Storage plus one Ore & Stone Storage requires 4 Adhesive, so collect 4 Swamp Tar.
- One Tanner's Kit plus one Iron Chest requires 7 Adhesive, so collect 7 Swamp Tar.
- One Abysmal Whip plus one batch of Weapon Barbs requires 4 Adhesive, so collect 4 Swamp Tar.
- Two Hard Leather operations plus one Fuel Pellet require 3 Adhesive, so collect 3 Swamp Tar.
These totals cover Adhesive only. They do not replace the other materials, facilities, or progression needed for the final product. Checking the complete recipe before travelling prevents a situation in which you return with enough tar but remain blocked by Leather, bars, thread, planks, shards, or another station.
The maximum stack of 99 is generous for ordinary projects, but the weight still scales with quantity. At 0.5 per item, 10 Adhesive represents 5 total weight, while a full stack represents 49.5. Process the amount you expect to use rather than carrying a large reserve everywhere. A stored reserve near your crafting area is more practical when several building and equipment recipes are approaching.
Fix common Adhesive problems
The Kiln recipe is missing
Collect Clay directly and check the Crafting section of the build menu again. Clay is the material tied to unlocking the Kiln recipe. If it appears but cannot be constructed, compare your inventory with all four listed costs: 8 Ash Logs, 20 Stone, 6 Clay, and 10 Fire Runes.
Swamp Tar is difficult to see
Look for small, shiny black blobs rather than large mineral nodes. Search around the eastern bridge leading toward the Whispering Swamp vault, then follow the path beyond it. Inspect the boundary between the path, dark ground, and water instead of running through the area at full speed. Clay nodes are larger and block-like, so do not mistake them for tar.
A recipe still says Adhesive is missing
Confirm that the material went through the Kiln and that you collected the finished output. Swamp Tar is an input item, not a valid substitute in an Adhesive slot. The item in your inventory must be named Adhesive.
The batch produced less than the project needs
Recalculate from the individual recipe operations. One Swamp Tar always corresponds to one Adhesive, but several projects consume more than one. Lumber Storage and Ore & Stone Storage each use two; the Abysmal Whip uses three; the Tanner's Kit uses six. Hard Leather uses one Adhesive per two Leather in each operation.
The swamp trip did not provide enough tar
Combine the visible ground deposits with any Swamp Tar obtained from Putrid Rats. Recheck the route past the eastern bridge because deposits can blend into the terrain. If you already have Miscellaneous Salvage, inspect its contents for the listed 3–6 Adhesive result, but do not depend on that uncommon source when you need a predictable quantity.
Adhesive collection checklist
Before leaving your base, identify the exact craft that is blocked and total its Adhesive requirement. Bring an axe if Ash Logs are still missing and a pickaxe if you still need Stone or Clay for the Kiln. In Whispering Swamp, gather one Swamp Tar for every Adhesive required, mine at least six Clay if the station has not been built, and check Putrid Rats encountered along the route.
Back at the crafting area, build the Kiln from the Crafting menu if necessary, load the Swamp Tar, start each operation, and collect the output. Verify that your inventory contains finished Adhesive before opening the destination recipe. Keep any surplus stored for Hard Leather, storage structures, Weapon Barbs, Fuel Pellets, the Tanner's Kit, or the Abysmal Whip rather than discarding a material that appears across several crafting paths.
